North Arlington – Emil Yampaglia, who had the distinction of being appointed as North Arlington’s municipal judge by Mayors of both political parties has passed away at the age of 94.

Yampaglia, a Newark based attorney was the 1990 Democratic nominee for the office of Mayor when he challenged incumbent Republican Leonard R Kaiser.

Kaiser would defeat the challenger in that contentious campaign in the shadow of the infamous Florio tax hikes that saw Democrats lose in large numbers.

The Yampaglia family has had generations of public service to North Arlington beyond the Judge’s public service.

Both of his sons, Mark Yampaglia, a Rutherford based lawyer would be appointed Public Defender as well as a member of the Borough Council by former mayors Russ Pitman and Peter C. Massa.

Yampaglia would be elected to the council in 2005, 2008, 2011 and again in 2016, the last Democrat to be elected locally.

He too would also be the Democratic nominee for mayor in 2018.

His other son John previously served as a member of the North Arlington Planning Board.

Yampaglia is survived by his wife Jeannette and one granddaughter.

NA Today will post funeral arrangements when announced.
