Saldanha is one of two independents in this race to succeed the late Mayor Joseph Bianchi.
The Democrats are running four-term councilman Mark Yampaglia for mayor along with council running-mates Peter Massa and Josie Papile.
Massa is a former school board trustee, school board president; councilman and two-term mayor.
Papile is a life-long resident and recently retired CFO with Paragon Sports in Manhattan.
Both Massa and Papile are life-long residents and Papile is a graduate of NAHS while Massa, a retired NAPD sergeant and former president of the local PBA graduated from Queen of Peace HS.
All three Democrats are college graduates and Yampaglia and Massa have earned advanced degrees.
Saldanha has no running-mates for council and neither does the other independent hopeful.
Pronti is running with incumbents Brian Fitzhenry and Allison Sheedy, both first-term incumbents.
Yampaglia is the longest serving elected official in the race having been appointed twice and elected four times. Democrats endorsed Yampaglia in March and was officially vetted and nominated by Democratic primary voters last June, the only candidate of the four to earn his way onto the ballot with voter support.
In addition, Yampaglia has earned the support of the following individuals:
· US Congressman Bill Pascrell
· Governor Phil Murphy
· New Jersey Senator Paul Sarlo
· Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese
· Assemblyman Gary Schaer
· County Executive James Tedesco
· Freeholder Steve Tanelli
· Freeholder Tracy Zur
· Former NA Mayor Ed Martone
· Former NA Mayor Russ Pitman
· Former NA Councilman Pat Roche
The Yampaglia campaign is running a positive campaign on the following platform:
· The construction of a Bike and Running path at the banks of the Passaic River that would connect the Arlington Diner to Riverside County Park.
· Payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTS) for hosting Holy Cross Cemetery with the Archdiocese of Newark and lobbying support from the state legislature for a permanent funding stream.
· The repeal of rolling tax reassessments that are intrusive to homeowners and unnecessary for North Arlington residents.
· Renovate the North Arlington Senior Center
· Construction of pocket parks, community gardens and a permanent Farmer’s Market during the warm weather months.
· Elimination of metered parking along Ridge Road.
· New strategies to alleviate traffic with less density and improved leaf collection and snow removal.
· An improved relationship between the Mayor’s Office and the NA Board of Education and Queen of Peace Elementary School. Let’s put children and quality education as well as safety first.
· A commitment to single-family home construction versus the proliferation of multiple dwellings and more apartments.
· A new policy regarding street parking that offers preferences to homeowners and tenants alike.
None of the other three campaigns to date have offered a comprehensive campaign platform like Councilman Yampaglia, the ranking member of the North Arlington Mayor and Council.
Born and bred in North Arlington, Councilman Yampaglia is a graduate of Queen of Peace Elementary and North Arlington HS where he played Varsity Baseball for the Vikings.
A graduate of FDU with a BA and MA, Yampaglia is a graduate of the Touro School of Law and has a private practice in Rutherford.
A member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa, Yampaglia served as the Borough’s Municipal Defender before becoming a councilman.
The son of retired Municipal Judge Emil Yampaglia, his brother John is a member of the North Arlington Planning Board.
Married to his wife Shirley who is a nurse, the Yampaglia’s are parishioners of Queen of Peace.
