NJ SENATOR NELLIE POU ENDORSES BALWIERCZAK & YAMPAGLIA FOR NA BOROUGH COUNCIL

Longtime NJ Legislator selected by Democrats Thursday Night to succeed the late William Pascrell in the US House of Representatives!

NORTH ARLINGTON – New Jersey State Senator Nelida “Nellie” Pou (D-35), a longtime member of both the New Jersey General Assembly and New Jersey Senate was tapped by Democrats in a quick and harmonious process to succeed the late William “Bill” Pascrell in the Halls of Congress representing the 9th Congressional District.

Pou, a fixture in Paterson city government and Passaic County politics for over four decades was unanimously selected by the Democratic county organizations of Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties to replace Pascrell who past last week after serving fourteen terms in the US House of Representatives.

Pascrell also served as Mayor of Paterson and as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly.

Ironically, this is the second time Senator Pou has succeeded Pascrell, when he gave up his seat in the legislature to become a member of Congress in 1997 when he defeated one-term Republican William Martini.

The 68-year old veteran legislator rose to the NJ Senate to replace John Girgenti, and has served as the Latino Caucus Chair in the upper house.

Pou, who is the early favorite would become the first Hispanic female from New Jersey to serve in Congress. A former Assistant Business Administrator (2003-14), and subsequently Business Administrator for the City of Paterson (2014-18), the North Haledon resident is married and would also become the first female Puerto Rican to serve from the Garden State in the House.

While serving in the General Assembly, she also served in leadership as Deputy Speaker as well as Minority Leader.

Pou attended Kean University, Rutgers and the University of Virginia.

In a rousing and upbeat acceptance speech to committee members. Pou spoke both in Spanish and English to this diverse north Jersey electorate that spans three counties.

Pou emphasized her campaign will include helping and assisting Democrats in “down ballot” races in places like North Arlington, where Democrats have not served since 2019. The North Arlington Mayor & Council is made up of seven Republicans despite having more Democrats then registered Republicans by nearly a thousand voters.

Both Balwierczak and Yampaglia were pleased by the party’s decision to back Pou, who they believe will be well received in North Arlington.

“She is capable, qualified and more than ready to serve. Her long legislative record of achievement as well as her understanding of local municipal government makes her the perfect partner for North Arlington in the House to continue Bill Pascrell’s legacy and body of work. We endorse her whole heartily and look forward to campaigning with her in the weeks ahead to bring responsible two-party government back to the Borough of North Arlington,” offered both Balwierczak and Yampaglia.

“She is a fantastic choice and her support and endorsement are very much appreciated. We can’t wait to work with her and her team so that North Arlington will run “blue” come November 5th.”

Meet the Democrats this Saturday at the North Arlington Post Office from 9 to 12 located at Ridge Park Drive to register to vote or discuss the issues you truly care about!
