5 reasons why two-term MAGA Mayor Dan Pronti won’t debate Democratic challenger John Balwierczak!
MAGA Mayor Dan Pronti has made it clear through his supporters and followers that he will never debate his Democratic opponent John Balwierczak, choosing instead to divert from the issue by continuous online attacks and simply afraid to face the public in a race he believes he cannot lose.
North Arlington is clearly in crisis.
Double homicides on Ridge Road, federal drug raids on the Belleville Pike, random reassessments and higher property taxes coupled with fat pay raises for himself and the rest of the council, to say nothing of the complete decimation of the Ridge Road business district and unbridled proliferation of apartment construction that has urbanized North Arlington into an extension of Belleville and a gateway for Newark, not Bergen County.
Under Pronti, North Arlington is no longer small, safe, suburban, or affordable.
So why won’t Pronti accept or even discuss a debate challenge?
Here is one explanation by one of his key followers online:
So, as we get into the dog days of this campaign to bring back responsible two-party government, think about these reasons for Pronti’s hesitation to engage residents and voters:
The central question for voters is why Pronti won’t face the public and defend his policies in an open forum? There are five possible explanations for a mayoral incumbent to avoid a debate.
1. Avoiding scrutiny of his record. A debate could bring questions about municipal spending, property-tax increases, development approvals, debt and the borough’s budget. An incumbent must defend decisions made during his administration.
2. Keeping attention away from difficult local issues. Questions about senior housing, rolling property-tax assessments, proposed development and the data-center controversy could force the mayor to explain his positions in detail, especially awarding himself and the entire borough council another raise for the fifth consecutive time!
3. Pronti Prefers a controlled campaign environment, in essence a lopsided stacked deck. Interviews, campaign literature, and prepared public appearances allow candidates to frame their messages. A live debate introduces unpredictable follow-up questions and direct challenges from an opponent on sensitive issues like the Ridge Road double homicides and the federal drug raid of a Belleville Pike business mixed up in narcotics that Pronti embraced on his FACEBOOK page in 2024!
4. Reducing the risk of an unplanned exchange. Balwierczak could challenge Pronti directly on specific decisions, demand figures and ask follow-up questions that are difficult to address with a prepared statement. A debate would give residents an opportunity to hear both sides respond in real time.
5. Pronti believes a debate offers little political benefit. An incumbent may prefer to rely on name recognition, past election results and established support rather than give an opponent equal time on the same stage. Something he has rejected. More importantly, Republican voters are deflated and Trump’s support has deteriorated based on the country’s current economic conditions Dan Pronti unconditionally supports as a real estate agent.
The 2026 mayoral contest features Pronti, seeking a third term, against Balwierczak. The candidates have sharply different public messages on property taxes, massive Republican overdevelopment and overall municipal accountability.
The most important question to put to this mayor is straightforward: Will he agree to a fairly moderated, public debate or forum with Balwierczak, with equal time for both candidates and questions from residents?
That answer is no.
A refusal alone does not establish that Pronti is afraid of a debate or unable to defend his record; it is political calculation that he can only lose support then strengthen it.
It’s called a four-corner stall.
Take time off the clock and hope nobody is paying attention given his miserable record.
